I graduated from Universita' degli Studi di Verona Medical SChool, Verona, Italy and completed the Neurology Residency at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Currently, I am pursuing Fellowship training within the Neurology Department at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Following my interests in neurodegenerative diseases and clinical research, I am seeing patients in the Neurology Clinic and gaining experience as a clinical investigator within the Neurological Clinical Research Institute (NCRI) and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) at MGH.
Throughout my medical training and postgraduate experience, I have always been interested in neurodegenerative diseases: My medical school graduation thesis project was on studying familial Parkinson's disease and I investigated molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease after moving to the U.S. at Duke University in Durham, MNC, first and while a Neurology resident at Emory University in Alanta, GA, and as a recipient of the NINDS (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Research Education Program for Residents and Fellows in Neurology and Neurosurgery - R24 Research Training Award.
I am particularly interested in understanding mechanisms of neurodegeneration, translating these mechanisms to human neurodegenerative diseases, and using this knowledge to identify disease biomarkers and develop novel therapeutics for these debilitating diseases. I find the overlap of two clinically heterogeneous neurodegenerative diseases, namely ALS and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), particularly intriguing.
With the support of the 2013 Neurodegenerative Diseases Pilot Study Grants Program provided by the Harvard NeuroDiscovery Center, I am leading a project aimed at an improved understanding of FTD-ALS through the clinical and biomarkers characterization of the FTD-ALS continuum, which represents an important unmet medical need.
